Daybreakers

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433362/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayYiMygqlfo

Plot:
In a world 10 years into the future, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires’ food supply – human blood – is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society’s needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form.

Review:
I was interested to see this movie, even though everyones making vampire and werewolf movies lately. They seem to be the in thing currently. The second I saw “Film Finance Corporation Australia” at the start I had some mixed feelings about how good the movie will be. Being an Aussie, most films made in Australia are well… Australian. Something bogan or cliche and usually ending up crap. Luckily, the Queensland Government only gave some money to produce the film, not be involved in its plot or production. However, there are an arse load of well known Australian actors in the movie. Claudia Karvan, Sam Neill, Vince Colosimo and Isabel Lucas (of Transformers 2 fame, and also Homo’s and Gays, oops!… I mean, Home and Away).
The movie showed promise, and given with the influx of Vampire and Werewolf movies (see The Wolfman review I just did), it was a little away from the norm of Vampire movies. Not so much about Vampires killing people all the time, but more that what happens when they run out of humans. It was a good concept, but I don’t think it was executed well enough, and missed a little substance in the plot. Still worth watching though, but not as good as I thought.

The Wolfman

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780653/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS02xaTIdRI

Plot:
Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father, Talbot sets out to find his brother… and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe, tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline has come to investigate.

Review:
The trailer for The Wolfman had promise, it looks like it contained an interesting storyline, some action, gore, and flying intestines. It did live up to the latter parts, being mainly the gore and flying intestines, and plenty of them. However it didn’t keep up with a good plot line, the story revolved around Lawrence Talbot who returns home after the news of his brothers death to find it was due to a Werewolf, while trying to track down the killer of his brother, he’s mauled by the Werewolf and takes on the form himself.
The plot didn’t live up to it’s hype, it was fairly uninteresting. Usually I’ll find movies with one main story line and several other smaller ones that follow in and out throughout the film. But in this case there wasn’t many which left myself to just watching the movie.
The movie looked good, as was Benicio Del Toro’s acting. Anthony Hopkins really didn’t live up to his usual roles and from a producing point of view was probably a waste of money being in this film.

I’d wait till Tight Arse Tuesday to see this one, or hire it from the local dvd store on a boring Saturday night.

Edge of Darkness

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226273/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvRdGKxsmD8

Plot
Thomas Craven, is a detective who has spent years working the streets of Boston. When his own daughter is killed near the door of his home, Craven realizes that her death is only one piece of an intriguing puzzle filled with corruption and conspiracy, and it falls to him to discover who is behind the crime.

Review
Sometimes getting free tickets to movies is usually used to promote something that might be crap. I saw the trailer for Edge of Darkness on the Apple trailers last week, a website which I visit regularly on my iPhone. From watching the movie trailer Edge of Darkness looked good and I was putting it on my list of movies to go see.

Edge of Darkness focuses on Detective Thomas Craven played by Mel Gibson, his daughter comes home who is quickly killed on his front door step, after becoming violently ill, to give a good opening to the movie and set the story.
Craven soon starts to follow the trail leading from her daughter being ill to track down the killer. I don’t want to give away too much as I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. But I definitely recommend going to see this at the movies, it’s worth paying for. There is a solid and interesting plot.

Brüno goes through one reinvention of himself after another, ultimately straying to areas far removed from his own self. Perhaps when Brüno finds an activity that he truly does love, he will also find that über-fame he so desperately desires

Review
I was a bit late doing this review, but it’s been on my to do list.
I was always a fan of Sasha Baron Cohen, especially in his days of “Ali G”, I remember on that show when he had a small segment with “Borat”. When I got around to watching Borat, I got half way into the movie and switched it off. I didn’t find it that funny, which is kind of where I was at with Bruno.
Some parts of the movie were funny, but some were over the top and were there to shock people. Which is probably what it was intended to do, but really are extremes the only way he can get any attention in a movie?

I really haven’t reviewed this movie much, but what can I say? It wasn’t a movie, it was just an hour and a half of crap that was supposed to be funny. Sure I laughed at some of it, but most of it I didn’t.

Avatar

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1_JBMrrYw8

Plot:
When his brother is killed in battle, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge’s intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar” identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Review:
After seeing several movie trailers about Avatar, it looked like one hell of a good movie. I finally got around to going to see it in 3D, I’ve seen 3D movies before and it was pretty cool and given that James Cameron always seems to make these epic movies that are box office smashes and hang around for a while. I thought I’d give this a shot and see just how good it would be.

Since seeing this, people have been raving about it about how it’s a great cinema experience and it’s the best movie they’ve ever seen. I disagree with them though on that.

Firstly, if you’re long sighted like I am, seeing it in 3D is a waste of your time. You’ll need to take your glasses off to see it in 3D when you need glasses to see anything in the first place. So do yourself a favor and go see the normal version.

Which brings me to the 3D…

When people think 3D, they think seeing things in 3D visually. When I see a movie in 3D I actually want something that feels like its in front of me, like I can touch it if I reach out in front of me. While James Cameron used the 3D to add some depth, it looked like he did it from the screen and backward. Not the screen forward to the audience, and backward. The 3D was good, but it wasn’t great. It’s 3D, it should be able to reach out and grab me!

The plot… well that was pretty thin. It was the basic storyline of Pocahontas as seen in this image.

avatar1.jpg

There isn’t much more than I can say, the plot didn’t seem that original to begin with and predictable. I think in a way it was a let down on the movie and let me down also. Not to mention that I even fell asleep in the movie because some parts of it dragged on. 3 hours for a movie is epic, but lets not forget you can’t spend 45 minutes dragging on the same part of the movie unless it’s the opening scene to Saving Private Ryan.

The special effects were impressive, if you didn’t include the 3D. It’s worth watching for the use of special effects.

Still, if you want to go see this movie, go see it as it’s something that should be watched on the big screen. But don’t forget to go to the bathroom before hand because you won’t get to go for another 180 minutes!

Sherlock Holmes

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0988045/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQbmFAE5WI

Plot:
After finally catching serial killer and occult “sorcerer” Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson can close yet another successful case. But when Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must take up the hunt once again. Contending with his partner’s new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the dauntless detective must unravel the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic – and the deadly embrace of temptress Irene Adler.

Review:
While I did like this film a great deal, I think it was still missing something. The atmosphere giving from the movie was incredible, and I loved the sets, backdrops and special effects.
Once again, Robert Downey Jr was flawless in his role. He’s always been a favourite actor of mine, and well supported by Jude Law. Jude Law was definately the right role for the part of Watson. I’m looking forward to seeing Jude Law in Repo Men, where he plays a role that requires a bit more grunge and brute.

Paranormal Activity

Photobucket

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1179904/

Plot:
After a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban ’starter’ tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

Review:
As the movie poster says, “one of the scariest movies of all time”. I’ll put it down to this, I’ve seen scarier things in the bottom of my toilet. It was an hour and a half of my life I’ll never get back, seeing a couple spending most of their time sleeping in fast forward, the occasional wake up and scream to some thumping on their stairs, then the woman stabs her boyfriend in her sleep. HELLO SPOILER!
Filmed in the same style as the Blair Witch Project, 80% of the movie features a wobbly camera. There are also several mistakes in the movie that are noticable.
Save your money and go see Cloudy with a chance of meatballs in 3D. It’ll be more entertaining.

Terminator Salvation – 4 minute trailer

I really can’t wait to see this movie. I recently sat and watched all three Terminator movies, then seasons 1 and 2 of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Seeing the previews for this in dribs and drabs on the internet made me sit up seeing the special effects. I think it will have a good story line too and be epic.

Here’s the 4 minute HD trailer to check out.
