Home Networking

So I’ve got my small form factor desktop which I purchased out of lease from Westminster. It’s a HP DC7800, very nice pc and quiet. I’ll be turning this into my media center, I’ll need to install a large system drive in it and I’m thinking about a 2TB sata drive. They’ve come below the $100 mark now.

For a small form factor case, it does well in that I can fit 3 hard drives, if I remove the DVD Drive. This could be good for expansion, at the moment I want 2 x 2tb drives in it. Then at a later stage I can make an image of the Windows install, and blast it back into a larger OS drive. So I have the potential for 6tb which would do nicely for a while, I’m at the 2.5tb mark spread across 4 drives, only 3 are networked currently.

It all revolves around money though. I’m in a new house, which will require getting some cabling running up the hallway or some Ethernet Over Power access.

New to the power of three

Well, my time as Westminster School will come to an end. I’ve taken up a job at an IT company, I felt I needed to move on and do something more challenging and stimulating. I’ll be working at www.lettscom.com.au as a Network Engineer/Computer Technician.

I’m also packing to move house at the moment, I pick up the keys tomorrow after work. Moving into a smaller place, the intention was to save some money but it doesn’t seem like I’ll be doing much of that but maintaining the place and living there will be easier.

The added bonus of starting a new job is the annual leave payout I’ll get, it should clear some debt off that I’ve been chipping away at slowly over the past year.

I’ve also removed the portfolio portion of this site, I’ve registered a new domain name which is where it will move too. I won’t be telling the domain name yet until I’ve got the site going and how I like it!

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Years

Yes, I changed my theme again. I’m just trying it out.

It’s a bit sad when my favourite day of the week is payday. But considering I’m on fortnighly pay it can’t be that bad. Most of mine disappeared with Christmas presents and bills, and I’d like to spend just a little bit on something I want this time!

Big W have the Pioneer Dreambook 7″ for $188 at the moment, running Google Android OS. So I’d like to play with it and have some kind of simple web browsing device when I’m in the lounge room instead of a laptop that requires a 2 minute start up process. I’d also like to take advantage of the post Christmas sales for some clothes!

Also, I want to purchase a domain name, and at $11 a year. Why not! I’m hoping to push my freelance work again, it’s always a bit on and off with me. But I need a bit more work!

Building up your portfolio

I’ve found something important while building up your own portfolio. Don’t include everything, it doesn’t always show your best work. Just include your best work that you are proud of and consider good work. Not all your work reflects what you do as a designer, some times it represents what a client wants, which may not appeal to every one.

New Theme

Yep, thought it was about that time. Minimalist theme. It’s been ported from the Minimous theme from Posterous.com into WordPress. I thought I’d concentrate on writing a little more than how good my blog looks. So far I haven’t felt the need to change it, but I may add some things to it over time.
