Nokia 6120 Classic

Well, I took the plunge and got a new phone a week ago and went with the Nokia 6120 Classic. I’ve spent the last 2 years with a Sony Ericsson K750i, which was a really good phone. While there’s always a learning curve from one brand of phone to another, it hasn’t been to bad with going from the SE to the Nokia.

When I had the SE k750i, it was more for a purpse. Camera, walkman, calls, texting, bit of a calendar. I used the camera, and walkman functions for a long time. But when I got my iRiver X20 I didn’t use it anymore and my use of the phone dropped considerably. The problem with the SE’s are those silly little joysticks that fail after a years use, which they’ve been putting in their phones for god knows how many years, and they still haven’t realised they break! I got sick of not being able to scroll down, then up, left and right followed. They also used Sony Memory sticks, which meant you had to sever a leg so you could get a 1gb card to shove in it. Sony Ericsson have since wised up and are using standard flash based cards which is the only way they are going to sell more phones.

The Nokia 6120 comes with MicroSD, I hadn’t seen them upclose but it literally is the size of a fingernail. First impressions of the 6120 is it’s a sexy looking little phone. Kind of like that slim looking girl you see when you’re out in the sleek black dress, but looks can be deciving. First contact with her and she’s hard to work out, and isn’t exactly great when it comes to photos. If you missed the underlying subject here… Nokia cameras look great and take shit photos.

I find the Nokia also very slow when navigating around menu’s or loading text messages, especially when accessing the memory card.

I’m yet to play with the video calls, but I don’t expect to much. But it is an easy phone for the minimal uses of texting and calls these days that I make. I don’t take to many photos anymore and I use the iRiver for music. It does however use a standard plug for transferring data to usb, the same one my iRiver uses infact. A few bugs like accessing the memory card when in USB mode, I get some errors. It’s not a bad phone, I can live with it. There are things I can say are wrong with it, but I’m sure a fireware upgrade or maybe installing the Nokia software on my computer will show me a few things to play with.

Home sweet home

I’ve been reading a lot about prefab homes and real estate a lot lately and I’m finding it very fascinating. There are some really great developments going on around the globe that a lot of people would be blind to. A few months ago I came across Inhabitat.com which has a lot of articles on eco-friendly matters. But I was particularly interested in their articles on architecture. There are a lot of people designing and building eco-friendly, cheap, easy to build houses that can be placed just about anywhere, and it’s definately blown my mind to the possibilities of what you can do when you want to build a house, or have something else somewhere.

To see exactly what I’m talking about have a look at these links:

Mfinity Microsystem

French designed Drop House

The Swingline

Yoga Studio that looks great.

and just for pure coolness, a water tower turned into an eco friendly house.

Prefab houses are becoming quite popular, and if being eco-friendly is part of it and doesn’t impact on the environment then I’m all for it. Here are a few places in Australia I’ve found that are worth looking into, but aren’t all eco-friendly, but there’s mountains of them on Google if you want to spend the time looking.

New look

As you can see, I’ve whacked a new template on. I haven’t had a chance to play with the options and have things display properly. But I’m going to do some development on it soon to play with… when I’ve got some time to myself.

I have the promotional material article ready to go. I just have to remember to upload some images and post the article!

Getting localhost to work in Firefox with WAMP

This is a common problem I’ve come across at work and I couldn’t find a simple fix for it, Google results just didn’t cut it and I didn’t like the WAMP forums.

If you get a page time out in Firefox when trying to view your localhost/127.0.0.1 then it’s a high probability that you’re behind a proxy. Most people would have directed you to the ‘hosts’ file located in your Windows directory. But that may not work, if this is the case you want to do the following.

In Firefox click:

Tools
> Options
> Advanced Tab (displayed with the Cog icon)
> Networking Tab (See screenshot)

FireFox Networking Tab

If you’re running a proxy, you’ve most likely got your details in there already so you can access the internet. What you want to do is where Firefox says “No Proxy for:” and the field, you want to enter “127.0.0.1″ in along with your local IP addresses if you wish. Click ok and get back to the browser and you’re all set. Another screenshot below for reference also.
