I encountered the various spambot issue on my clans PHPBB2 forum but after I installed a particular mod they stopped coming and I was even able to set registeration back to user instead of the admin having to verify then allow them to complete the registration.

The mod is called The Humanizer and you can get it here http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=383788
